Western Australia runs its own grid, so the eastern-states VPPs mostly don't apply. In Perth and the South West, the main option is Synergy Battery Rewards, and for many people it is not really optional: joining a VPP through your retailer is a condition of the WA Residential Battery Scheme rebate.
The deal is straightforward. Synergy can call up to 30 activation events a year, usually on hot or cold afternoons and evenings, and pays 70c for every kWh your home exports during them. It is a good rate. The trade-offs are a 2-year initial term and no way to sit out an event you would rather skip.

- Synergy customers who installed a battery under the WA Residential Battery Scheme after 1 July 2025.
- People happy to let Synergy run a limited number of events in exchange for a known rate.
- Owners of Alpha ESS, SolaX, Fronius, Deye, SAJ and other brands on the Supported Solutions List.
Who should skip it
- Horizon Power customers in regional WA. Battery Rewards is for the Western Power network only.
- Anyone who needs to guarantee a full battery on a specific hot evening. You cannot opt out of individual events.
- Batteries installed before 1 July 2025 or outside the WA scheme, which are not eligible.

How the money actually works
During an activation event, Synergy pays 70c per kWh of net exports, GST free. "Net" matters: it is what your home sends to the grid after covering its own use during the event, not the battery's total discharge.
Each event is capped at your battery's installed capacity in kWh, so a 10kWh battery can earn on at most 10kWh per event. There are up to 30 events in any 12 months, each lasting up to 4 hours with about 2 hours of standby, typically between 3pm and 9pm on hot or cold days.
Synergy also pays an Energy Offset Credit, which covers energy used during events. It does not publish a fixed figure for this, so we leave it out of the maths.
Payments are worked out quarterly and credited to your Synergy bill.
Worked example: a 10kWh battery through a full year of events
Built only from Synergy's published terms, with every assumption spelled out.
- Published: 70c per kWh of net exports in events, capped per event at installed battery kWh, up to 30 events a year.
- Assumption: your home exports a net 7kWh per event after covering its own use. That is our figure for illustration.
- The Energy Offset Credit is left out because Synergy does not publish an amount.
Real figures depend on how many events Synergy calls, how charged your battery is, and how much your home uses during them. These are VPP payments only, separate from the WA scheme rebate and from the federal battery discount.
Which batteries work with Synergy Battery Rewards
This is Synergy's own compatibility list as published when we checked. Lists change, and it is often the exact model, inverter and firmware that matter, not just the brand, so confirm your system with Synergy before you count on the numbers.
- Equipment must be listed as "DER-Storage" on Synergy's Supported Solutions List (updated 23 September 2026).
- Activation-ready brands on the list include Alpha ESS, Anker, Deye, Dyness, Fronius, SAJ, SolaX and SofarSolar, among others.
- Tesla Powerwall 3 appears on the list only under DER-Generator, not DER-Storage, so check with Synergy before assuming it qualifies.
- Inverter of at least 2.5kVA and battery of at least 5kWh.

The catch: fine print worth reading first
- No opting out. Once you are in, you cannot skip an individual event. If a heatwave evening is exactly when you wanted the battery for yourself, Synergy still gets it.
- 2-year initial term. After that it rolls on with 20 business days notice. The terms we read do not mention an exit fee.
- Specific tariffs only. You need to be on A1, K1, Midday Saver or EV Add-On. Check which one suits your usage before switching.
- Check the list, not the brand. Your equipment has to be listed as DER-Storage on the Supported Solutions List. Tesla Powerwall 3 only appears under DER-Generator.
- Scheme batteries only. Your battery must have been installed under the WA Residential Battery Scheme after 1 July 2025.

How it sits next to your battery rebates
Battery Rewards is tied directly to the WA Residential Battery Scheme. That scheme pays up to $1,300 for Synergy customers (up to $3,800 for Horizon Power customers in regional WA), and joining a VPP through your retailer is a condition. The scheme rebate and the Battery Rewards payments are two different things: one comes off the battery price, the other is paid per event on your bill. Neither is combined with the federal discount into one figure.
We always treat these as separate numbers: the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount comes off the battery invoice, any state incentive is its own amount with its own rules, and VPP payments are ongoing credits on your power bill. Check your state: WA battery rebates. Then run your own numbers in the savings calculator before you add any VPP income on top.
